The Aquaculture Centre was established in 1988 as a collaborative venture between the University of Guelph and the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. It provides Ontario aquaculture information to industry participants and frequently to the general public. The Aquaculture Centre cooperates with Provincial and National aquaculture institutions and associations to facilitate information and technology transfer to the private sector.
Each year the Aquaculture Centre together with the OMNRF produces the AquaStats factsheet about fish farm production in Ontario. In 2022, Ontario’s aquaculture industry produced about 4,057 tonnes of fish, worth approximately $98 million from 146 farms and hatcheries. The Aquaculture Centre at the University of Guelph plays a significant role in the industry, providing research and technical expertise to support the sustainable growth of Ontario’s aquaculture sector. Other publications address contemporary issues such as current legislative requirements, ongoing research activities, and new welfare codes of practice.
The University of Guelph offers undergraduate, master’s, and PhD courses and projects in aquaculture, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of aquatic ecosystems, fish biology, nutrition, aquaculture production, and fisheries management.
